Approximately
20,000 medicine wheels existed on this continent before the
Europeans set foot on this land. The medicine wheels were
constructed and used as centers for prayer, meditation, and
ceremonies. Today we can take this ancient symbol into our own
lives, build them in our backyard, and return to a sacred space
where we can strengthen our spirit, reconnect with nature,
understand our self, and reestablish our relationship with all
creation and the Great Mystery. Medicine wheel locations become
power points, vortexes of energy and healing. 1
The medicine wheel
reminds us that the world is guided by right relationship and the
natural order, and that we must respect all living things.
Progressing in a sun wise (clockwise) motion, each stone teaches
us and affects us at some point in our life. Being near the
medicine wheel “can help bring balance to different aspects of
our being,” as we remember the following:
Each of us is deeply connected to everything
that exists; each of us is a critical part of the sacred
medicine wheel of life. The law of relationship is a natural
law, a real law that is absolutely critical to these times when
we have lost our sense of balance, our sense of connectedness
with all that is life. The medicine wheel can help you regain
some of what you have lost.
If you live life in a harmonious way, always
respecting the sacred circle and all other beings in it, every
step you take can be a ceremony that celebrates your connection
with the Creator. If you live in this way you realize you, like
the medicine wheel, are a tool of life guided by the Creator
that is within you and around you. 1
As you conduct your own
private ceremonies within your own medicine wheel, remember that
ceremony is a way to give back to creation some of the energy that
you are always receiving. Through the medicine wheel we enter into
the sacred law of relationship, and we can learn how to live in a
sacred manner, walking harmoniously with all creation.
