Inipi

Participation in this Ceremony is beyond physical words. The experience is unique to each individual and is a very spiritual/mystical experience.

This circular structure is made of willows and covered. The size of these structures can vary depending on the number of people who participate in the Ceremony. In the old days the structure was covered with hides or buffalo robes. Today the structure is normally covered with blankets or tarps.

Participants enter this lodge in a clockwise motion, and set themselves on the ground. Heated rocks are brought in and placed in the center altar, where water is dipped on the rocks creating steam. This steam rises and takes the prayers of the participants with it. There are normally 4 rounds, with the lodge door being opened after each round. Prayers and drumming are an integral part of the lodge.

Some lodge leaders only allow single gender lodges, while others allow both genders to enter the lodge together. It is always a good idea to find out about this before attending a lodge ceremony. Women who are on their moon are normally not allowed in the lodge.
